Krabi Area Attractions, Thailand

Krabi's hosts some wonderful spots amid its jungly, limestone mountain spotted interiors both on the islands and the mainland. Many of the islands and hinterland lie amid national parks, with oodles of caves, waterfalls, forest temples etc that are easily explored at leisure. Check out a few of the following.

Krabi National Parks

Thailand is well known for its spectacular national parks, and Krabi Province boasts some of the best in the country.

Than Bokkharani lies off the route between Krabi and Phang Nga. A cool forest shades a number of pools and waterfalls. Khao Phanom Bencha In Khao Phanom district, about 20 kms north of Krabi on the mainland, is a densely forested park hosting many scenic spots. Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi, West of Krabi town, covers an extensive area of mainland beaches. Mu Koh Lanta Marine National Park is located in the southern most point in Krabi province, this park covers the greater area of Lanta Island and numerous surrounding islands.

Caves

Located in Krabi are many interesting caves and grottoes, some with evidence of habitation back to prehistoric times.

Ao Luk District, Ao Nang Area, Koh Lanta Area (Lanta Island) and Phi Phi Island all have caves worth visiting. A popular spot on Phi Phi Ley is the Tham Phraya Nak or Viking Cave, containing prehistoric paintings alongside more recent pictures of modern ships. The cave is best known for hosting swiftlet nests, which are avidly collected by locals - a process that can be viewed by boat from a safe distance.

Temples

As with most areas in Thailand, Krabi has no shortage of interesting temples worth visiting.

Wat Tham Seua, 5 km from Krabi Town is the Tiger Cave Temple, built into a long shallow limestone cave, and shaded outside by natural forest. Many other caves large and small are found in the mountains that surround the monastery, which can be explored at leisure. The area has been the site of archeological findings including stone tools, pottery shards, and unfired clay holy images, dating from prehistoric into historic times. Wat Klong Tom (Temple and Museum) is another intersting spot near Krabi Town.

Forests and Wildlife Sancturaries

Krabi is home to some spectacular wildlife and dense rainforest. A visit to these areas can be the higlight of a trip to the area, especially for nature enthusiasts.

Khao Phra - Bang Kram Wildlife Sanctuary (Khao Nor Chuchi), in the region bordering Krabi's Khlong Thom district and Wang Wiset of neighbouring Trang is a lowland forest area sheltering more species of birds than any other forest reserve in Southern Thailand. The Thung Teao Forest, located in the area of Khao Pra-Bang Khram no-hunting zone next to the Bang Teao Village, is a 2.7 km forest trail.
